BCP Council launched Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival in 2011 with the festival becoming an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation in 2015. The festival attracts over 130,000 attendees across two days each year.

The Brief

Arts by the Sea Festival’s website required a complete overhaul following frustrations highlighted within customer feedback. The previous design had poor navigation and unpleasant user experience, leading to low satisfaction, user times, page views, registrations and engagement with artists. HotShot was briefed to redevelop the website following event attendee feedback, introducing an improved layout and design, and easy to use event listing and integrated social streams and live event feeds.

The Delivery

HotShot implemented a clean, minimal design that focused on clean-cut lines and stylised imagery associated with the festival. Utilising a cleaner design facilitated an app-like approach to the user experience, ensuring that the site functioned impeccably on mobile devices. Using WordPress CMS with custom field templates, HotShot developed a more intuitive event schedule and artist pages that allowed users to easily navigate through the various events taking place during the festival and quickly learn more about performances and artists.

The Results

The new Arts by the Sea website utilised in-depth SEO strategies that led to unprecedented growth in site visitors throughout the festival period. The newly designed festival schedule and artist information pages were utilised on mobile devices as a sustainable guide to the event. Website visitors increased by 120% than the previous year and the time spent on the site increased by 400%.
